1616 - The Alchemical and Medical Works of Paracelsus
This imposing folio volume comprises the first part of the highly important collected German works of Paracelsus, the iconoclastic Swiss physician, alchemist, and philosopher who revolutionized Renaissance medicine. This 1616 edition, published by the heirs of Lazarus Zetzner in Strasbourg, represents the second folio printing based on the meticulous editorial work of Johannes Huser. Huser undertook the monumental task of gathering Paracelsus's widely scattered and often unpublished manuscripts, translating Latin texts into German where necessary, and organizing them systematically, first published in Basel (1589-91). The Huser editions are foundational for Paracelsian scholarship, presenting his challenging ideas in a more accessible format. Volume includes his revolutionary Paragranum and Paramirum.
This first volume is dedicated specifically to Paracelsus's extensive medical writings. Within these pages, one finds the core tenets of his radical medical philosophy: the rejection of ancient Galenic dogma in favor of observation and experience, the concept of the human body as a microcosm reflecting the macrocosm, the emphasis on specific diseases requiring specific remedies (often chemically prepared – the basis of iatrochemistry), and the doctrine of the Tria Prima (Salt, Sulphur, Mercury). The volume is enhanced by a striking title border featuring Paracelsus's portrait and that of Hermes Trismegistus.
